Odisha women journalists' forum silent protest against Killing of Gauri Lankesh
Bhubaneswar: Women journalists from Bhubaneswar on Friday staged a silent protest march condemning the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru on September 5.
The protesters held placards and posters that read, “We are all Gauri", “Silence is not an option”, and “Ideas are bulletproof”
and protested against attempts to strangulate voice of fearless
journalism.
Hosted under the banner, Odisha Women Journalists' Forum,
the march was conducted from Ram Mandir Square to Ekamra
Haat here. The journalists demanded arrest of the murderers who
killed Lankesh at the earliest and also protection for all journalists across India. Sarada Lahangir from the forum, terming the killing an effort to strangulate freedom of speech and expression said, "The killing
was an attack on rational and free thinking. It was a serious threat to the democracy.” The protest was also against the climate of ‘hatred’ and intolerance’ in the society, she said. Minati Singha of the forum said, “It is the violation of freedom of expression, which includes the right of newspersons to
discharge their duties without fear, guaranteed by Indian constitution.” Apart from journalists members from other walks of life also joined the march.
